Max’s add-on costs $7.99 per month, $1 more than the similar Netflix program’s starting point.

Max Follows Netflix With an Extra Member Option (3)

Max rolled out an “Extra Member Add-On” feature for U.S. subscribers on Tuesday. At $7.99/month (regardless of tier), it costs $1 more than the entry-level price to Netflix’s own precedent-setting program and $1 less than its ad-free version. The new Max feature will also include the ability to transfer an existing adult profile to the extra-member account so the added-on user does not lose their place in binges.

“Extra Member Add-On and Profile Transfer are two key Max advancements, designed to help viewers with a new way to enjoy our best-in-class content at an exceptional value, and offer subscribers greater flexibility in managing their accounts,” JB Perrette, the CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Global Streaming and Games, said in a statement.“These updates provide a simple way for subscribers to add-on a new member to their account, or for existing subscribers who have users outside of their household to smoothly, and in an uninterrupted fashion, transition their profile so that extra member can continue to access Max.”

Netflix started this whole password-sharing crackdown nearly two years ago. All of the top streamers have since followed suit. And why not? Netflix has profited mightily from the initiative, which left password-borrowers with two options: 1) Get your own Netflix account starting at $7.99 per month (and going up to $24.99), or 2) Become an “extra member” outside of the main account-holders home for $6.99 per month (with ads) or $8.99 (ad-free).

The ad-supported Netflix account (“Standard with ads”) does not allow for extra members; the “Standard” plan without ads ($17.99/month) allows for one added member and the “Premium” plan allows for two.

Max has had a costlier barrier-to-entry from the jump. Max with ads starts at $9.99/month; “Standard” is $16.99/month and “Premium” Max is $20.99/month. Subscribers who elect to pay on an annual basis can save 16 percent on any one of those options.
